You're reading an E3 2009 preview, which we've broken into three sections to make it easy to sift through during this week of convention madness. Check out E3.1UP.COM for all (meaning words, screens, and videos) of our E3 2009 coverage. What's the game about? Set between the years of 1945 and 1955, Mafia II tracks 10 years in the life of Vito Scaletta, a poor Italian immigrant and war veteran looking for a way out of his life of poverty. As time passes, Vito will transform from a wannabe mobster to a made man, and along with the narrative, the player will see interesting changes within the open-world Grand Theft Auto challenger: the city will transform before your eyes, stores will open and close, and bribed police will look the other way (among other perks). Of course, it's an action game at heart, so expect hours of driving old-timey cars, gunning down various folks, and copious amounts of cursing. What's new for E3? While not yet playable, 2K showed us an early mission (said to be about three or four hours into the game) in which the newcomer Vito must help "send a message" to a local distillery owner, Fatman who refuses to pay protection fees to the mob. After leaving a diner and driving to the spot, we see Vito and his co-conspirators speaking in a room until the target drives up outside. Vito and crew open fire, but Fatman gets away -- as such, the player must chase him through the distillery. Vito corners Fatman (after gunning down numerous goons), but the foe manages to shoot Vito's associate Henry before being brutally executed in a gory close-up.
